September 5, 2009, Saratoga Race Course: Three-year-old Rachel Alexandra, Calvin Borel up, races in the Woodward Stakes against seven older males, including Bullsbay (right.)
Rachel Alexandra leads, on the way to her ninth consecutive victory. In May she had become the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness Stakes, defeating twelve male rivals after breaking from the far outside post, and in August she beat six colts to win the Haskell Invitational.
Despite tough competition from Macho Again (left), Rachel Alexandra wins the Woodward Stakes, something no filly or mare had ever done. She was voted Horse of the Year for 2009.
July 24, 2010, Monmouth Park: Rachel Alexandra awaits the start of her fourth race as a four-year-old, the Lady's Secret.
Trainers Scott Blasi (2nd from right) and Steve Asmussen (right) accompany Rachel Alexandra in the Monmouth walking ring before the race; as usual, Calvin Borel has the mount.
The Lady's Secret gave Rachel her second win of 2010. She had won the Fleur de Lis in June and placed second in two earlier races.
Rachel Alexandra is sprayed with cool water after the Lady's Secret, a race that was run on one of the hottest days of the summer. Some nearby tracks canceled racing entirely due to the oppressive heat.
August 29, 2010: Saratoga Race Course: Life at Ten (left) and Rachel Alexandra race to the first turn in the Personal Ensign Stakes, leaving the rest of the five-horse field far behind.
Rachel Alexandra leads by more than three lengths in the stretch before being passed by Persistently and finishing second in the Personal Ensign.
Rachel Alexandra (seen here and below at Monmouth on July 24th) was retired from racing a month after the Personal Ensign and sent to owner Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Farms in Lexington, Kentucky to begin a new career as a broodmare.

When Jess Jackson bought Rachel and sent her to Steve Asmussen's stable, she had already had seven wins for trainer Hal Wiggins, including a victory of more than twenty lengths in the Kentucky Oaks.
