The Personal Ensign Stakes

Sunday August 29, 2010: Saratoga Race Course

Reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra comes onto the track for the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Invitational.
Rachel Alexandra takes the early lead, followed closely by Life at Ten, who had won her last six races and was the second favorite in the mile and a quarter Personal Ensign.

After finally shaking off Life at Ten, Rachel Alexandra leads by three and a half lengths in the stretch.
Longshot Persistently passes Rachel Alexandra just before the finish line. Like the filly Personal Ensign for whom the race is named, Persistently was bred and is owned by the Phipps family and is trained by Shug McGaughey.
Alan Garcia celebrates his win on Persistently, who beat the 2009 horse of the year by a length. Life at Ten finished third, more than ten lengths behind Rachel Alexandra.
Rachel Alexandra won nine consecutive races with jockey Calvin Borel, beginning with her last race as a two-year-old and including her entire three-year-old campaign, in which she was undefeated.
Borel removes Rachel's saddle after the race, her fifth as a four-year-old and the last race of her career. Despite two strong workouts after the Personal Ensign, Rachel Alexandra was officially retired from racing on September 28th.
