Nicanor (#10, center) races toward the first turn. This was the coltís fourth race and his first on grass. He had two 2nd-place finishes at Gulfstream earlier in the year.
Nicanor breaks his maiden, winning by 15 ľ lengths. His brother Barbaro won his first race at two on the same track before going on to win five more, including the 2006 Kentucky Derby.

Nicanor, again ridden by Rosie Napravnik, leads the field of eight at the top of the stretch. At far left is White Holiday.
Nicanor increases his lead to more than three lengths. . .
. . . then holds off a hard-charging White Holiday to win the one and one-eighth mile allowance race by a length and three quarters.

Nicanor's next start was to have been the July 18th Virginia Derby, but he was scratched the day before due to a hind-leg injury sustained in training.
