Zenyatta and the Breeders' Cup Classic

Saturday November 6, 2010: Churchill Downs

Zenyatta looks around at the cheering spectators as she joins the walkover from barn to paddock before the Breeders' Cup Classic. . .
. . .then does a few of the "dance steps" she is known for.
The only female horse in the field of twelve, Zenyatta takes part in the post parade. Her regular jockey, Mike Smith, is aboard.
First Dude (red cap, "DD") takes the early lead, followed by Quality Road (right.)
Zenyatta trails the field heading for the first turn.

Blame (second from right, blue cap) crosses the wire just ahead of Zenyatta (left) to win the Classic. Second from left is Fly Down, who was third; Lookin At Lucky (right) was fourth.
Zenyatta was undefeated going into this race, having won all nineteen of her previous starts, including the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic. A disconsolate Mike Smith said he blamed himself for the loss.
Zenyatta leaves the track with her groom, Mario Espinoza.
