Better Talk Now grazes near his barn at Fair Hill with his trainer, Graham Motion, in October of 2006.
Graham Motion trained Better Talk Now for eight years, until a suspensory injury led to the gelding's retirement in September 2009, at the age of ten.
Better Talk Now, known to his friends and admirers as Blackie, heads to the post parade for the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 9, 2007. Like his other races, this one was on the turf.
Better Talk Now, at eight years the oldest horse in the field, wins the 2007 Manhattan Handicap. It was his 14th win, and his final one, though he raced twelve more times over the next two years, frequently finishing second.
Ramon Dominguez and Better Talk Now return after the June 9th race. Dominguez rode Blackie in 30 of his 51 races and was aboard for all five of the Grade 1 wins, including the 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf.
Better Talk Now's final race was the Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga on August 15, 2009. He finished second, and the plan was to race him once more in October and then retire him. But an injury sustained in training hastened the retirement. Blackie remains at Fair Hill with Graham Motion and others who helped to care for him throughout his career.
